Since the 1970’s, James Stanfield has been in the forefront of providing sexuality education for individuals with developmental and related disabilities. Through writing, publishing, and producing high quality audio-visual sexuality curricula, Dr. Stanfield has brought easy-to-use, sensitive, real world curricula to special populations for several decades. Beginning with Winifred Kempton’s pioneering work, Sexuality and the Mentally Handicapped (which later evolved into the popular Life Horizons I & II video series) the James Stanfield Company has addressed the sexual and relational concerns of special-needs teens and adults.
Although many of JSC’s programs were developed for individuals with cognitive difficulties and disabilities, our purview has broadened to include a wider range of consumers. Our Circles curriculum is an example of a sexuality training series that is well suited to addressing the psycho-sexual educational needs of individuals with intellectual challenges that is equally beneficial for individuals with autism spectrum disorders, including individuals in the normal IQ range. Other Stanfield sexuality programs have dealt with the topics of child sexual abuse prevention, smart dating, puberty and so on.
Moving forward, JSC will continue to build its library of sexuality offerings that address the concerns of special populations. To this end, this blog will feature articles, essays and discussions of pertinent sexual-health topics and will take a sex-positive, inclusive stance. Following the World Health Organization’s definition of sexual health below, JSC will continue to extend this definition as a guiding principal in its development and production of materials for teens and young adults with disabilities and special needs:
“Sexual health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality. It requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence” (World Health Organization 2006).
