Module 2: Workplace Manners and Boundaries

In this vignette, students will learn how developing a friendly camaraderie and strong sense of professionalism enhances work performance. In particular, nuances of tone of voice, body language and respect for personal space (both physical and psychological) are examined. With both co-workers and bosses, the workplace runs smoother when certain social and sexual boundaries are not crossed. With this vignette, you’ll teach your students the importance of good workplace manners: taking the time to greet others when arriving; responding to small talk; respecting personal space; avoiding gender based harassment; and leaving their problems at home.

Over-socializing, clowning around, losing one’s temper and showing disrespect toward older co-workers are each examined in detail in four separate vignettes. The implications of using company time for one’s social life or as rehearsals for a stand-up routine are shown to be reflections of not taking one’s job seriously. Your students will learn why the boss prefers employees who are reserved and understated rather than loud and boastful. They’ll also learn that he or she expects new employees to listen more than they talk and to always treat him or her with deference.

A worker’s ability to show respect, enthusiasm, maturity, and professionalism is crucial to success in the first 90 days. The three vignettes in this part focus once again on those crucial nonverbal cues that convey enthusiasm and respect. The first deals with general eagerness to do the job well, the second with treating fellow co-workers respectfully when one is in charge and the third with both enthusiasm and respect in the all-important realm of customer service.
