What It's About

"I can't do this." "I'm just not smart enough." "Why bother trying?" If you have heard these words from your students, you have witnessed learned helplessness in action — the deeply ingrained belief that failure is inevitable and effort is pointless. For students with learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral challenges, or intellectual disabilities, this pattern can become deeply entrenched and devastatingly self-fulfilling, eroding motivation across every area of their lives.

Making the Effort is built on attribution theory, the well-researched psychological framework that examines how people explain their successes and failures. The program teaches students a powerful truth: effort is the one factor they can always control — not luck, not task difficulty, not innate ability. Through 12 engaging text-based scenarios, students follow relatable characters face challenges in school, work, and social settings, learning to replace helpless thinking with a mastery-oriented mindset that drives genuine achievement.

Designed for ages 12 and up, the program includes 12 structured lessons across 12 lessons, each supported by a detailed teacher's guide with discussion prompts, comprehension activities, and extension exercises. Making the Effort is especially effective for students in special education, alternative education, and intervention programs who need a structured, research-based approach to building resilience, persistence, and belief in their own capabilities.

The program is available through a Stanfield+ subscription, giving your classroom instant access to all 12 lessons and the complete teacher's guide.

This curriculum is presented in a relaxed, child-friendly format that makes it accessible for even the youngest students.

2

What You'll Learn

Across 12 lessons and 12 structured lessons, Making the Effort takes students on a structured journey from understanding why they give up to developing the persistence skills that drive real, lasting achievement. Each lesson uses real-life scenarios to make abstract psychological concepts concrete, relatable, and memorable.

Understanding Attribution

The program begins by helping students understand how they explain their own successes and failures — and why those explanations matter so much. Students learn the four common attributions — ability, effort, task difficulty, and luck — and discover that only effort is both internal and controllable. Scenarios show characters who blame bad grades on "being dumb" or credit success to "getting lucky," then contrast these with characters who recognize the central role of effort and preparation. Students begin to identify their own attribution patterns and understand how those patterns directly shape their motivation and willingness to try. This foundational knowledge gives students both a vocabulary for discussing persistence and a concrete framework for changing their own thinking.

Building Persistence

Once students understand attribution, the program focuses on developing a mastery orientation — the belief that challenges are opportunities to grow rather than proof of inadequacy. Lessons model characters who encounter setbacks in school assignments, job tasks, and social situations, showing how strategic effort, asking for help when stuck, and breaking difficult tasks into smaller manageable steps all lead to meaningful progress. Students learn to distinguish between productive struggle and unproductive frustration, and they practice positive self-talk strategies that replace "I can't" with "I can't yet, but I will keep working." This approach makes these internal cognitive shifts visible and observable, giving students a clear, concrete picture of what persistence actually looks like in daily life.

Real-World Application

The final section bridges classroom learning to the real world, ensuring that new mindsets translate into new behaviors. Scenarios show characters applying effort-based thinking to academic challenges, workplace expectations, and interpersonal conflicts. Students follow peers as they navigate difficult homework assignments, learn a new job skill through practice, and recover from social mistakes — all while actively using the attribution framework they have been building throughout the program. Lessons emphasize that setbacks are normal and temporary when met with sustained effort, and that success becomes self-reinforcing once students experience the powerful connection between trying hard and achieving meaningful results. Students also explore how setting realistic goals, tracking their own progress, and celebrating small wins strengthens their sense of control and growing competence.

Every lesson is supported by a comprehensive teacher's guide that includes discussion questions, role-play activities, and practical strategies educators can use to reinforce effort-based thinking throughout the entire school day — not just during program time.

Students will feel empowered as they put these concepts into practice and start seeing positive results in their relationships.

3

In Conclusion

After completing Making the Effort, students will have a fundamentally different relationship with challenge and failure. They will understand that their success depends primarily on effort — a factor they can always control — rather than on fixed ability, luck, or task difficulty. This shift in thinking changes everything.

Students will demonstrate a mastery orientation, approaching difficult tasks with persistence rather than avoidance or immediate surrender. Teachers consistently report visible, measurable changes in classroom behavior: fewer "I can't" statements, more willingness to attempt challenging work, greater resilience when initial attempts do not succeed, and a noticeable increase in academic engagement. Students develop improved self-efficacy — the genuine belief that they are capable of achieving meaningful goals when they put in the work and refuse to give up.

These shifts extend well beyond academics. Students carry effort-based thinking into social situations, job readiness activities, and daily-living tasks, making this program a powerful complement to any transition, life-skills, or social-emotional learning curriculum. The attribution framework gives students a lasting mental tool they can apply whenever they feel stuck, discouraged, or tempted to quit.

Making the Effort is available as part of a Stanfield+ subscription, which provides unlimited access and the complete teacher's guide. It is an ideal starting point for any social-emotional learning, resilience-building, or growth-mindset initiative in your program.

The skills learned are designed to be lifelong assets, aiding students in feeling secure and connected throughout their educational journey and beyond.
